Permanent exhibition

Gallery of Young Poland’s Stained Glass Masters

The permanent exhibition, restored and modernised in 2020, presents works designed by four outstanding artists of the Young Poland period: Stanisław Wyspiański, Józef Mehoffer, Stefan Matejko and Wojciech Jastrzębowski.

All were associated with our Studio and realised their designs here, often establishing long-term collaboration. The relationship between the studio and the designer is a key aspect of the stained glass creation process. The designer’s vision determines the appearance of the work, and a team of experienced artists and craftsmen ensures that this vision is brought to life. Each of the exhibited works has a unique story behind it, and all of them together tell the story of the Polish stained-glass art of the early 20th century, which was in full bloom at that time. The feature that unites and best reflects the work of the above four is versatility. Although Wyspiański remains the unrivalled model in terms of the multitude and diversity of disciplines, the others can also boast considerable artistic output. All the artists were connected to Krakow, where they were educated and developed their talents, however, despite similar education and common environment, their style evolved in very different directions.

The works designed by Mehoffer, Matejko and Jastrzębowski were made in our studio in the first half of the 20th century, under the personal supervision of the artists. On the other hand, the stained glass windows designed by Wyspiański were made between 2016 and 2019 by Piotr Ostrowski, the studio’s artistic director, as part of the “In the making” series created by him.
