Schreiter in the Making

Schreiter in the Making is the third project of our series, in which we established cooperation with the world-famous artist, Professor Jochannes Schreiter, who, inspired by the idea, offered his project to the Stained Glass Museum.

This project is also the nucleus of the glass collection of the contemporary Stained-Glass Museum, the only resource in Europe and in the world of works by the most outstanding, contemporary artists in this field. A unique collection of stained glass of Young Poland, with two Wyspiański’s masterpieces: “Apollo” and “Polonia”, another goal of our institution is to create a collection of contemporary glass, presenting modern, secular museum objects – the effects of cooperation with other contemporary artists. Creating such a gallery has now become possible thanks to the acquisition of a new exhibition space in the renovated basements of our museum.

Professor Johannes Schreiter is one of the most important contemporary European artists working with glass. During his almost seventy-year career, he gained international fame and realized hundreds of stained-glass windows in Germany, France, England, Wales, Sweden, Israel and the USA. He is an icon of contemporary artistic glass – and therefore an ideal candidate to initiate a new collection.

Professor Schreiter himself was enthusiastic about our idea and chose the project for realization: it was originally intended for the electoral chapel at the Coronation Cathedral in Frankfurt, but the concept of interior design changed and this design had never been performed in glass before.

On January 11, 2019, he met in Frankfurt with the director of the Stained-Glass Museum, Piotr Ostrowski, and signed a cooperation agreement and the stained-glass project was transmitted.

As a result of cooperation, an original stained-glass window will be created, according with the project of Johannes Schreiter, combining traditional stained-glass art and proprietary techniques of both Schreiter and Ostrowski. It will be a unique work bringing together modernity and tradition, as well as the Polish and German art and culture.

The finished stained-glass window will become part of our contemporary glass collection and will be displayed in the new gallery of the Stained-Glass Museum. Before this happens, each stage of work on the project will take place live in front of guests visiting our Workshop.

The creation of the work is accompanied by workshops for children and museum lessons for young people inspired by contemporary stained-glass art and the work of the artist.

Schreiter in the Making project is under the honorary patronage of the German ambassador to Poland.
