The open-air exhibition in the Planty Gardens is part of the celebrations for the 120th anniversary of the Krakow Stained Glass Workshop S.G. Zelenski, which today continues under the name of the Stained Glass Workshop and Museum.
Thanks to the Krakow Stained Glass Workshop S.G. Zelenski, established in 1902, the most outstanding Polish artists were able to create stained-glass works. At the beginning of the 20th century, concepts constituting a creative contribution to the then-ubiquitous Art Nouveau were created here. The distinctive features of Cracovian stained glass emerged, earning itself the label of the Krakow Stained Glass School. This took place on many levels – from monumental works to innumerable personal projects in tenement houses.
We would like to present this hidden heritage of the city, of which many residents remain unaware. Hidden in staircases, courtyards and corridors, Cracovian stained-glass windows pass unnoticed in the everyday rush and are still shrouded in mystery, which we reveal to a wider audience. The carefully curated group of eighteen examples is a list of the most interesting works. Illuminated showcases placed along the Planty Gardens allow visitors to observe stained-glass windows that are often inaccessible on a daily basis.
In Wawel Royal Castle, dozens of churches, including Saint Mary’s Basilica and the Wawel Cathedral, the Czartoryski Palace, the Town Hall Tower, public buildings and in tenement houses… All these buildings contain stained-glass works that were created in the Stained Glass Workshop and Museum over the last 120 years. Looking at their status and number, we realise that they are the most important buildings in the city, so that we can say Krakow would not be the same without the Stained Glass Workshop and Museum. Today, as we celebrate its 120th anniversary, we can confidently say that Krakow is the City of Stained Glass.
