Opening: 8 December 2025
The Stained Glass Museum invites you to a small but unique temporary exhibition accompanying the Schreiter under construction project. Its central element is a newly created stained glass window by Johannes Schreiter, an outstanding German artist and one of the precursors of contemporary stained glass art. The work, designed years ago for the Election Chapel of Frankfurt am Main Cathedral, was created between 2019 and 2024 in the studios of the Stained Glass Museum as part of the Under Construction series initiated by Piotr Ostrowski, Director of the Museum.
The stained glass window is a perfect synthesis of the characteristic features of Schreiter’s artistic language: a departure from figuration in favour of abstraction, a consistently constructed system of signs, sophisticated colours and masterfully executed lines. The artist creates meditative compositions, reduced to their essence, in which the tension between order and disintegration is one of the most important themes.
The subtle cracks, gaps and breaks in lines characteristic of Schreiter’s work are a record of the experience of fragility, destruction and, at the same time, the possibility of renewal. In his ambiguous works, the artist invites the viewer to a personal encounter with art: a search for meaning and the discovery of their own interpretations.
As part of the exhibition, in addition to the stained glass window created at the Museum, several light panels with the artist’s characteristic works are also presented, showing the broad context of his work.
